Pulmonary vascular responses during advancing gestation in fetal lambs in utero.

چکیده
bed in which we deduce that hydrostatic pressure is elevated. In the newborn lamb, the results suggest a lower capillary pressure and larger capillary bed than in the fetus. The pulmonary vascular bed of the fetus, we conclude, may contain large unperfused areas; and vasodilation at birth may take place mainly by recruitment of additional areas. There is support for these ideas in the very nonlinear pressure-flow curves characteristic of the fetal and neonatal circulation:1.6 they suggest the presence of unperfused areas which are recruited when inflow pressure is increased. The fluid in the fetal acini is not a plasma filtrate. Its formation depends on active C1 transport across the acinar epithelium. The epithelium also forms a barrier to the passive penetration of most plasma solutes and therefore to the passive accumulation of liquid. Absorption of lung liquid at birth requires changes in the pulmonary epithelium, only some of which have yet been identified.

Gestational changes in pulmonary vascular responses in fetal lambs in utero.
Pulmonary arterial (PA) blood flow patterns, changes in pulmonary blood flow, and pulmonary vascular responses to graded hypoxemia and intravenous acetylcholine (ACh) were studied in 15 fetal lambs in utero 3-12 days after surgical implantation of an electromagnetic flow transducer and PA catheter. Phasic PA flow in the fetus was forward only during the first third of systole, almost zero durin...
متن کاملMorphological development of the pulmonary vascular bed in fetal lambs.
The morphological development that accompanies increasing pulmonary blood flow and decreasing pulmonary vascular resistance with advancing gestational age has not been delineated. To study this point we developed a method of comparing pulmonary arterial vessels of the same generations in fetal lambs. Pulmonary arteries were perfused with glutaraldehyde solution at pressures appropriate for gest...
متن کاملEffects of acetylsalicylic acid on the ductus arteriosus and circulation in fetal lambs in utero.
Intra-arterial and intravenous catheters were inserted in six fetal lambs at 125-130 days of gestation. On the following day, fetal arterial pressures and blood gases were monitored and fetal cardiac output and its distribution were measured by injection of radionuclide-labeled microspheres 15 mum in diameter. Acetylsalicylic acid, 55-90 mg/kg of estimated fetal weight, then was administered in...

متن کاملFailure of postnatal adaptation of the pulmonary circulation after chronic intrauterine pulmonary hypertension in fetal lambs.
To determine the effects of chronic intrauterine pulmonary hypertension on the perinatal pulmonary circulation, we induced chronic elevations of pulmonary artery pressure in 24 late-gestation fetal lambs by maintaining partial compression of the ductus arteriosus with an inflatable vascular occluder. Pulmonary artery pressure was increased from 44 +/- 1 to 62 +/- 3 mmHg for 3-14 d. Although lef...
